Spirograph is a geometric drawing device that produces mathematical roulette curves technically known as hypotrochoids and epitrochoids. A hypotrochoid is a roulette traced by a point attached to a circle of radius rolling around the inside of a fixed circle of radius, where the point is a distance from the centre of the interior circle. An epitrochoid is a roulette traced by a point attached to a circle of radius
rolling around the outside of a fixed circle of radius, where the point is at a
distance from the centre of the exterior circle.
Peter Hubert Desvignes, architect and engineer developed a "Speiragraph" in 1827. This device created elaborate spiral drawings, which many years later (between 1845 and 1848) would become very useful in helping to prevent banknote forgeries as there were nearly endless variations of roulette patterns that it could produce and they were extremely difficult to reverse engineer.
